What is Vitamin B12?
Our body requires 13 different vitamins to maintain healthy functioning. Eight of these vitamins belong to the B-group and include niacin, folate, thiamine, biotin, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, B6 and Vitamin B12. All of these vitamins have specific jobs to support our health and Vitamin B12 is arguably one of the most important vitamins we need.
Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that supports the formation of red blood cells and contributes to DNA synthesis. It can be found in dairy products, fish, meat and fortified breakfast cereals. Our body does not produce this vitamin itself and so we need it in our diets. Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the intestines.
Who is at risk of Vitamin B12 deficiency?

As Vitamin B12 is primarily found in meat products, vegetarians and vegans are at greatest risk of developing a deficiency. Furthermore, because of how it is absorbed into the body we know that certain conditions or surgery linked to the stomach or intestines can lead to absorption issues and therefore deficiency. This includes Crohn's disease, gastrectomies or a gastric sleeve, pernicious anaemia or celiac disease.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is usually confirmed by having a blood test. However, sometimes those with a deficiency will have normal levels of B12 in their blood yet still experience the symptoms.
What are the symptoms of B12 deficiency?

Insufficient amounts of Vitamin B12 in the body can lead to a deficiency. A variety of symptoms can be experienced including:

irritability

tiredness and fatigue

brain fog, loss of memory and a general decline in mental ability

pins and needles (paraesthesia)

mouth ulcers

changes in mood and behaviour or depression

disturbed vision
Who is suitable for treatment?

Vitamin B12 injections are safe for many people. Your nurse will carry out a full medical consultation to ensure you are suitable.

You may not be suitable for Vitamin B12 injections if:
​
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding (refer to your GP)
- You are presently undergoing investigations or treatment in relation to your deficiency
- Allergy to B12 or cobalt
- You have Leber's disease
- You have hypokalemia (low potassium levels)
