SMILE

A gummy smile is characterised by excessive gum visibility when smiling. This can occur when the upper lip lifts too high, exposing more gum tissue. This feature is certainly unique and of course beautiful but may bother some people. Some celebrities known for having or having had a gummy smile include Gwen Stefani, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Garner, Beyoncé and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Treatment with Botox or dermal fillers can help to reshape the smile, offering a more proportionate and confident appearance.

Why Do I Have a Gummy Smile?

A gummy smile occurs when an excessive amount of gum tissue is exposed when a person smiles. This can be caused by an overactive upper lip muscle, a high lip line, or an enlarged upper jaw. A gummy smile can also result from genetic factors or habits developed in childhood, such as thumb-sucking. Non-surgical treatments such as Botox injections can relax the muscles responsible for pulling the lip up, creating a more balanced smile and reducing gum exposure.

How Can Gummy Smile Be Treated?

A gummy smile - where too much of the upper gum is visible when smiling, can be effectively treated with anti-wrinkle injections, also known as Botox. This is a quick, non-surgical solution that softens the appearance of the gums and balances the smile.

When certain upper lip muscles (mainly the levator labii superioris) are overactive, they lift the lip too high when smiling. A few small Botox injections are strategically placed to relax these muscles, reducing the lift and allowing the upper lip to sit more naturally over the teeth and gums.

This treatment is virtually painless and takes just a few seconds with small, quick injections into the muscle.
